Systemic Research presents highlights of three NSF Programs at the American Council for Education Conference in Phoenix

Systemic Research presented highlights of three National Science Foundation undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs during the American Council for Education biennial “Educating All of One Nation” Conference in Phoenix, AZ, on October 7, 2005. The session was entitled “Strengthening the STEM Foundation of Future Black, Hispanic, and American Indian Scientists and Engineers: Highlights of Three National Science Foundation Undergraduate Programs.” The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP), Tribal College and Undergraduate Program (TCUP), and Model Institutions for Excellence (MIE) programs were presented including each program’s contribution to the development of a diverse workforce knowledgeable and skilled in the STEM areas vital to the continued economic stability and growth of our country.

Dr. Jason Kim and Mrs. Linda Crasco of Systemic Research summarized each program’s successful intervention models, lessons learned, and student outcomes based on their work. The Prairie View A & M University HBCU-UP project Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Enhancement Program (STEM-EP) was presented by the Project Manager Dr. Kelvin Kirby. STEM-EP has focused on recruitment and retention, reform and assessment, and student and faculty development. Mr. David Temple of the National Science Foundation presented the foundation’s perspective of the MIE program emphasizing the importance of the milestones achieved by the six MIE institutions.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about successful undergraduate STEM project design, development, and implementation, how to monitor academic key indicators and use the data for project intervention, and funding opportunities in federal programs. They were actively involved in questions and answers with the presenters who represented outside evaluators, a project manager, and a federal official. MIE key indicator reports and a HBCU-UP case story publication were disseminated.
